Module 1:
THE WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE OF IMPRESSIONISM
Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Berthe Morisot…just a few of the household names associated with Impressionism, artists whose work we know and love. But the story of how and why Impressionism came into being is just as intriguing as the artworks themselves. Equally as fascinating is the evolution of the movement: the introduction of plein air painting; the shift from the timeless to the ephemeral; the increasing importance of colour and light. In this module, we explore the emergence of this new style of painting, the artists who developed it and the dazzling works they produced.
Module 3:
IMPRESSIONISM IN THE AGE OF INDUSTRY
The mid- to late 19th century was a period of tremendous change. Technological innovations facilitated vast industrial growth in France, transforming both the rural and urban landscapes forever. From an explosion of factories in the suburbs to the expansion of the railway network, no one was immune to the rapid pace of modernization, least of all artists. By looking closely at paintings that reflect this very theme, we will not only learn how the Impressionists recorded the changing world around them, but also how they engaged and treated the topic of industry in their art.
